Texas Retina’s Ashkan Abbey, MD, recently appeared on the ReachMD podcast to discuss “Retinal Vein Occlusion as a Marker of Systemic Risk.” This was the third episode he contributed to their “Eye on Ocular Health” series about retinal vein occlusion (RVO).

In this latest episode, Dr. Abbey discusses the critical relationship between retinal vein occlusion and systemic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cerebrovascular disease, as well as why patients with retinal vein occlusion deserve a broader medical evaluation beyond an eye exam alone.

“Retinal vein occlusion is more than an ocular disease — it can also be an important marker of underlying systemic vascular risk,” shares Dr. Abbey. “As retina specialists, we are often in a unique position to identify patients at risk for future systemic vascular events and help facilitate timely multidisciplinary care.”
