Texas Retina’s Ashkan Abbey, MD, recently appeared on the ReachMD podcast as part of their “Spotlight on Retinal Vein Occlusion” series.
In the first episode of this series, Dr. Abbey discusses distinguishing urgent vs. monitorable retinal vein occlusion. Because this condition can range from mild, monitorable disease to vision-threatening pathology requiring immediate intervention, he highlights why early risk stratification is essential for preserving sight. Dr. Abbey also outlines how he evaluates macular edema, ischemia, and neovascularization to determine when to initiate anti-VEGF therapy and when close observation is appropriate.
In a second episode of the podcast series, Dr. Abbey delves into the case for prompt treatment of retinal vein occlusion. He explains how persistent edema and elevated VEGF can lead to irreversible retinal damage and vision loss, and why early anti-VEGF initiation is essential for preserving vision and preventing neovascular complications.
