In the September 2023 issue of the peer-reviewed medical journal Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, Texas Retina’s Ashkan Abbey, MD, describes the use of a dexamethasone intravitreal implant to close a macular hole that had reopened in a 79-year-old man after initial treatment with topical difluprednate and bromfenac. The case represents the first known instance of using an intravitreal dexamethasone implant as an alternative treatment option for patients seeking nonsurgical treatment for full-thickness macular holes.
