Board-certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist Benjamin R. Lin, MD, joined Texas Retina in September and cares for patients in our Dallas Main, Dallas North and Plano offices. He came to us from the world-renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami in Florida, where he completed fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery as well as his ophthalmology residency.
At Texas Retina, Dr. Lin provides care for a full range of vitreoretinal conditions, including macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachment and diabetic eye disease. He is passionate about clinical research to discover new and better treatments to restore and maintain vision. Let’s learn more about him.
Why did you become a physician? What inspired you?
My interest in medicine began in college when I supported a close friend through a serious illness. Being alongside them and seeing them navigate the healthcare system during that time really illustrated the importance of high-quality medical care. I saw how knowledge and technical skill, when combined with empathy, had the power to transform someone’s life.
Why did you choose to specialize/sub-specialize in ophthalmology and retina?
Vision shapes how people experience the world, and patients often describe it as their most valued sense. That’s what first drew me to ophthalmology. Within the field, I became interested in retina because of the wide variety of diseases, the challenge of microsurgery, and the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients. The surgical side of retina, with its demand for precision and focus, allows me to be present during patients’ most vulnerable moments while also building meaningful connections through ongoing care.
Why did you choose Texas Retina?
Texas Retina stood out for its longstanding reputation for excellence in both patient care and research. After meeting the team, it was clear they are an exceptional group of ethical physicians who place patient well-being above all else. Joining the practice allows me to contribute at the highest level of care while also collaborating with colleagues who are advancing the field of retina.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
The most fulfilling part of my work is developing lasting connections with patients while helping them preserve or regain their sight. Whether through navigating a complex diagnosis or performing delicate surgery, I find purpose in knowing that my efforts can make a lasting difference in someone’s quality of life.
What is your philosophy of patient care?
I believe patient care should combine excellence in medical and surgical treatment with empathy, clarity and partnership. Patients deserve not only the best outcomes, but also to feel heard and understood. I strive to meet each individual with compassion, respect and care tailored to their unique circumstances.
How is retina care continuing to evolve? What do you think are some of the most exciting developments?
Retina has evolved dramatically in the last few years. Breakthroughs in pharmacologic therapies, extended-release delivery systems and surgical technology have already transformed care. Looking forward, gene therapy, regenerative medicine and artificial intelligence-based diagnostics are particularly exciting, with the potential to change outcomes for conditions once thought untreatable.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I like tapping into my creative side through website creation, videography and illustration and using those skills to enhance medical education and mentoring. In 2015, I developed and co-founded an online ophthalmology education platform, EyeGuru.org, to accelerate ophthalmology training by creating high-yield resources for beginning ophthalmologists. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing, windsurfing, sailing, scuba diving, hiking and escape rooms.
