In the Winter 2023 issue of Retina Times published by the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), Texas Retina Associates’ Ashkan M. Abbey, MD, was featured in an article titled, “Managing the Challenges of Secondary IOL Placement.” The article presented three complicated cases and sought input from Dr. Abbey and two other retina specialists on the surgical techniques they would use to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Some cataract surgery cases are complex, requiring a follow-up surgical procedure called a secondary intraocular lens implant (IOL) which is performed by a retina specialist. In the article, Dr. Abbey explained some of the specific techniques he uses and emphasized the importance of paying close attention to the details of each early step in the procedure to avoid significant complications in subsequent steps.
